When Play School aired a segment about a girl with two mums, it resulted in accusations that the ABC was "using taxpayer money to indoctrinate toddlers in radical politics – effectively turning Play School into Gay School".
Lesbian mothers and gay advocates were quick to jump in, applauding Play School for supporting their cause.
But the truth is the segment was not about homosexuality. Neither was it about pushing a political agenda. It was about reality. There are a number of children out there who have two mums or two dads. Children need to be taught from a young age to accept that there are people and situations that are different to what they are used to – even if they (at some stage in their life) choose not to agree with them.
While I agree with the airing of the segment, I do not believe it should be used for political scoring in either direction. It draws unnecessary attention to something that is a simple reality. Leave Play School alone – and let kids get an understanding of the variety and diversity that exists in the world they live in.
